The Kona Coast is one of the top sites in the world for scuba diving. Me, my wife Janet and son Brandon all enjoy diving. Spearfishing is a very common sport here and something I'm going to learn.

This is a giant trevally or Ulua.

Every other Friday, Adrien's class meets at the beach and spends half the day snorkeling  and studying the reef and the various fish. Ocean safety is also taught.

The Honu (Turtles) are protected and very approachable along numerous beaches. While you are not permitted to touch or harrass them, it is not uncommon to have them swim beside you while snorkeling. They feed on the algea that grows on the rocks.

The manta rays are also pretty common in the Hawaiian waters. They have night dives where they flood the water with lights which in turn attracts the plankton. The big mantas come in to eat and provide quite a show. We haven't done that yet but intend to. Will try to take some night pictures underwater.

The whales migrate from Alaska and spend the winters in the waters around the Hawaiian Islands caring for their young. It is very common to see the whales from shore between December and March each year. During one day out on a charter fishing endeavor, we probably saw 15 - 20 different whales. The spinner dolphins are here year round and really cool. Will try to post a picture of them.

We plan on learning to kayak. Not sure what I'd do if / when a whale decides to play along side us. Good thing they're not maneaters!
